The culture of surf has become much more than the waves and encompasses an extremely strong connection to the arts – dating back thousands of years to when some of the world’s very first historians were carving bas-reliefs of surfers perfecting their practice. In the years since that initial connection the art of surfing has truly transcended beyond the documentation of life and has stretched and converged to include vast reaches of popular culture and commercialism.
Known most readily for its yacht-filled harbor, gilded mansions and elite summer residents, Newport, Rhode Island has always been a mainstay east coast destination. It was not until the early 1970’s, when the city’s no-surfing ordinance was lifted, that the well-tempered waters of Narragansett Bay were inhabited by much more than swimmers and sailors.
